“Beef”ing Up Support for Locally Sourced Food
The choices students have in the lunch line are soon getting a bit of a makeover: food sourcing is about to become more local. Anderson County Schools has recently partnered with Brenneman & Bucks Farm out of Frankfort to purchase USDA inspected, grass-fed only, ground beef for our students. Brenneman & Bucks Farm is a family farm that, according to their website, “is dedicated to producing healthy animals that provide nutrient-dense proteins using sound environmental and sustainable agricultural practices.”

At Anderson County High School on Friday, February 11th, students had the opportunity to experience this premium ground beef as it was used in making delicious hamburgers. Angela Pike, ACHS Food Service Manager, could tell a difference right away: "We could tell immediately after opening the ground beef packaging that this was a very high-quality product. When it was cooking, it smelled delicious.” The difference didn’t end there. Students, like senior Nicholas Jesse, were overheard saying “keep making these!” and “this is way better than frozen.” Director of Programs and Operations, Ronnie Fields, added, “We are excited about providing our students this premium healthy ground beef packed full of nutrients. Talking to the students today, it seems like everyone who chose this item really enjoyed it.”

If your child hasn’t yet had the opportunity to try the beef from Brenneman & Bucks Farm, time will provide that opportunity. Anderson County Schools has plans to expand the locally-sourced offering at our other district schools very soon. Anderson County Schools are pleased about this opportunity because using Ky Proud products supports our local community through the Ky Department of Agriculture's Farm to School Program.
