A Letter from our
Premier Representative
Clients,
Below is
the copy from the October Elementary Family Newsletter. They can
be used in part or whole in your school or classroom
communication, or just forwarded to your parents if you have
their emails. The newsletters give parents tools to help their
children learn 21st Century Skills. You can download
them in a much prettier format at
www.premier.us.
Right on Target!
Whether your family is agreeing to eat healthier meals together
or trying to spend more time on weekends as a family, achieving
goals takes effort, persistence, and planning. We all want to
accomplish different things—but it’s how we tackle those things
that sets us apart and that makes us winners.
Helping your child set goals is a great way to encourage him or
her to evaluate his or her life. If your child sets a goal, make
sure he or she takes ownership of that goal. Ensure your child
maintains focus on his or her goal—losing focus might mean that
the goal will get pushed aside for things that aren’t as
important. Our lives are busy, and it seems like setting goals
is just one more thing to heft onto our plates. But don’t
despair. . . here are some ways to help your child turn his or
her goals into reality:
Put ideas in ink.
Help your child write down ideas in his or her planner and set
deadlines. Ask your child what he or she wants to achieve and
when he or she wants to have it completed by. Talking about time
is important since sometimes your child’s idea of time is
different from reality.
Break down the task.
Huge projects or vast-sounding goals don’t always come to
fruition because they just seem too big to do.
Work toward the goal every day.
Help your child work on his or her goal every day. Even if it’s
just a tiny part, your child will still be working toward the
end result.
Track it!
If your child can see what he or she has done so far and where
he or she needs to go, he or she will be able to get there more
easily. Use a chart or graph to monitor your child’s progress,
for example. Or, if your child’s goal is measurable each day,
award stars for each day it is achieved.
Be inspiring.
Use yourself as an example. Tell your child about a goal you set
and how you achieved it.
Celebrate!
Giving and receiving recognition feels great! Cheer your child
on as he or she reaches his or her goal.
Parent Pointer:
Family Goal Setting
Your family can do it too!
Could
your family use a little help in this department? For some
families, it’s hard to accomplish goals because, as a family,
you’re simply too busy. So, how can your family accomplish the
things you want to do?
Dream the goal together.
As a
family, talk about which goals are most important to each of
you. Set out to accomplish the goals that are most important to
your family first.
Identify obstacles.
What’s
getting in your way? Make a list of the things that threaten the
successful achievement of your family’s goal.
Identify the things you need to achieve your family’s goal.
Make a
list of people whose help and cooperation you will need.
Set a date for the achievement of your goal.
Your
deadline should be realistic—not so soon that it will be
impossible to achieve but not so long that your family will
forget about it.
Write it down!
Have
everyone in your family make reminder notes and put them around
the house. This is a fun activity and each time your family sees
the notes it will help you take action toward the family goal.
Do it step by step.
Make a
plan that breaks down your goal into steps. Number each step,
too. This will help you prioritize which task needs to get done
first in order to reach your family’s goal.
Don’t cut corners!
Follow
your plan closely and try to work on it every day. You deserve
to reach your goal, but you have to work hard to make it happen!
