School Board Adjusts Calendar and Sets Graduation

In a special called meeting, the Anderson County Board of Education voted to adjust the school calendar in accordance with the new calendar relief guidelines set by the Kentucky legislature in House Bill 211.  In a unanimous vote, the board made the decision to reinstate Memorial Day as a day off, and set the last day of school for students as June 4th.

“We considered several options, one of which was extending the school day by 10 to 20 minutes, but the consensus was that our constituents wanted to have Memorial Day back and didn't really want extended school days,” said Board Chairman Scott Brown. “The earlier decision to take memorial day occurred to try and keep us out of school in June. Since that is not a reasonable option, we opted to dismiss school on that day as originally planned.”

The Kentucky House and Senate compromised on a plan last week that would allow school districts to waive the 170-day instructional requirement if 1,062-hours of instruction are met. Districts who cannot meet the required instructional hours are only required to keep students until June 6.

The board also set June 5th as the graduation date for Anderson County seniors. Anderson County High School’s graduation ceremony will be at 6:30 p.m. at the Civic Center in Frankfort KY.
