Middle School art program to participate in VSA Kentucky’s Art Inclusion Program

The Anderson County Middle School Art Program has been conditionally approved to participate in VSA Kentucky’s Art Inclusion Program. VSA Kentucky is a state organization that provides opportunities for people with disabilities through community arts programs.  Participation in this program includes a $1200 grant.

Anderson County Middle School art teacher Angela Champion is collaborating with VSA Kentucky Approved Teaching Artist Alfredo Escobar to plan and incorporate a thematic unit of instruction on muralism for the project.

Mr. Escobar will work with students in three of Mrs. Champion’s art classes, paying particular attention to students with disabilities. The artist will help students plan and paint three 4X8 foot murals based on a theme of class choice. At the end of the project, students will also have created a timeline of the events of famous Latin American muralist Diego Rivera's life.

“The murals will be installed in the middle school and will add to the culture and climate of the school,” says Champion. “This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity!”

Final approval of the grant is conditional upon Artist Alfredo Escobar submitting project documentation to VSA Kentucky in early January. Once the documentation is received by the organization, Champion and Escobar may begin the project. The deadline for project completion is May 1, 2013.
