Message from Superintendent Mitchell

Students, Parents, Staff and Community Members,

I would like to address the recent ACLU threat to litigation and decisions that have been made as a result of the guidance public schools received from the Ky. Department of Education.  I put the guidance on the website Thursday, September 5th so that it could be accessed by students, staff, parents and community.  This is an effort to clarify any misconceptions.

As superintendent, my goal is to respect the culture and beliefs of the community while ensuring that I follow board policies and procedures as well as state and federal law.  My intention of releasing the KDE guidance is to inform students, parents, staff and community members of the expectations set out by the Kentucky Department of Education and Kentucky School Board Association.  It is not to make quick decisions regarding major change due to the recommendations made by the ACLU.

Anderson County staff will continue to ensure that we do not interfere with student’s first amendment rights, including prayer before and after school and school related events or FCA student organized devotion. Thank you for your support of Anderson County Schools.

Respectfully,

Sheila Mitchell

Superintendent
