Good afternoon from Northern Kentucky University!

Northern Kentucky University has adopted a test-optional policy beginning Fall 2021. As a University, we will no longer require test scores, such as ACT or SAT, for Freshman applicants with a 2.75 unweighted high school GPA or higher. Adopting a test-optional admissions process allows NKU to look at applicants holistically instead of reducing the decision to a mere test score and GPA. To celebrate our new policy, the Freshman Application Fee for Admission is now waived. Students can apply to NKU today for FREE till November 15.

NKU and Test Optional FAQ

What is NKU's test optional policy?

  • Freshmen applicants with a 2.75 and greater unweighted high school GPAwill be offered admissions regardless of ACT/SAT scores.
  • Freshmen applicants with a 2.7499 unweighted high school GPA and lesswill be required to submit ACT/SAT scores for admission review.
  • Freshmen applicants with a 2.49-2.0 unweighted high school GPA offered admission will be placed in the Pathfinder Program, our signature student success program.
  • Freshmen applicants must have a 2.0 unweighted high school GPA to be considered for admissions.
How does test optional affect merit scholarships?
  • Merit scholarships are automatically awarded to admitted degree-seeking students who meet the eligibility criteria. We have removed test scores as a required element for most scholarship awards. Some students must provide test scores for admission but those test scores will not be used to determine merit scholarship awards. We have in-state and out-of-state merit scholarships available for students.

If a student is admitted, how will they be placed in courses without test scores?

  • We encourage applicants to submit all ACT/SAT scores available, as these can be used for course placement and will not factor into the admission decision. Any student without scores will be required to take the NKU Write (English/Reading) and ALEKS (Mathematics) or another exam approved by the Council on Postsecondary Education to determine course placement.

For more information regarding NKU's test optional policy, please visit nku.edu/testoptional.

NKU is committed to addressing the needs of our students and providing access to higher education. Moving forward we hope our test optional policy will remove a barrier that students face when pursuing a postsecondary degree. For additional questions, please reach out to our Office of Admissions by emailing [email protected] or calling 859-572-5220.

Good morning y'all! We have had the AP registration site open for a while now, but as far as I know, none of the virtual AP students have registered for the classes. This is a two step process and the absolute deadline is October 30th. I've attached directions on how to do this, as well as all of the join codes they will need. Ashlee and I will be glad to help with this in any way we can if there are any questions. We just really need to get this information out to the kids or they are going to miss out on taking their AP exams.

Dear Counselor,

Whether your students are back in school, learning remotely, or participating in a hybrid model, we know they're working closely with you on their journey to college. The College Board Opportunity Scholarships program was created to help your students complete steps for college while earning the chance at scholarships. Encourage your seniors to sign up for the program at cb.org/opportunity for a guide to college and a path to scholarships.

The first step in helping your students earn scholarships is to take the College Board Opportunity Scholarships pledge. When you sign up for the pledge, you'll receive a free digital toolkit as well as monthly reminders and resources.

Take the Pledge

Most students need financial aid to help pay for college. By completing the FAFSA®, students might qualify for thousands of dollars in federal grants, work-study, low-cost loans, and state and college scholarships. There's no other way to gain access to this money.

Encourage your students to complete the FAFSA and earn a chance at a $1,000 scholarship.

Completing the FAFSA is an urgent and important step—not just for accessing financial aid, but for staying on track to enroll in college. Research shows that 90% of students who complete the FAFSA enroll immediately in college—versus only 55% of students who don't file.

Between October and February, the College Board will award $800,000 to seniors who complete the FAFSA.

Tell your students to visit getfafsahelp.org for instructions on how to sign up for Wyatt?, a free FAFSA assistance chatbot that answers their questions by text. When students sign up for Wyatt and text their financial aid questions, Wyatt sends answers via text, a familiar medium that doesn't require internet access. Wyatt is available 24/7.

Seniors: Complete the FAFSA

Scholarship Tip: Complete the FAFSA for a Chance to Earn $1,000 for College

Thank you for your commitment to your students.

Sincerely,

College Board

A great chance to explore.

HiCynthia,

We’re excited to announce that the 2021 Profile in Courage Essay Contest for high school students is now open! You can learn more here.

We encourage you to write a 1,000 word essay describing a leader who demonstrated political courage as described by President Kennedy in his book, Profiles in Courage. Winning essays tell the stories of courageous lawmakers who stood up for what was right rather than what was easy or politically convenient. Today, as students like you are learning virtually or are back in the classroom, it’s clear that times are different. Our country is depending on leaders to demonstrate political courage — which is why your essays about inspiring choices are so important.

This year, you can win one of 15 scholarship awards for college, including a $10,000 first-place prize. Find out more about the contest here.
All essays must be submitted before January 15, 2021 — so don’t wait! We look forward to reading your essay and learning about a time when a leader’s political courage inspired you. If you are no longer a student, we hope you will share these details with someone that could benefit from this opportunity.

Best wishes,

Esther Kohn

Dear Cynthia,

We know this back-to-school season is anything but typical. On top of navigating changes brought on by covid-19, you're also working with your students to finalize their college lists, complete the FAFSA®, and submit college applications.

The good news is that the College Board Opportunity Scholarships program was created to help your students with these steps while earning the chance at a scholarship for completing each action. The program is currently open to class of 2021 students in the United States, Puerto Rico, and U.S. territories, regardless of citizenship status. U.S. citizens and residents attending Department of Defense Education Activity schools abroad may also participate. At least half of all scholarships are designated for students whose families earn less than $60,000 per year.

The first step in helping your students earn scholarships is to take the College Board Opportunity Scholarships pledge. When you sign up for the pledge, you'll receive a free digital toolkit as well as monthly reminders and resources.

Take the Pledge

The following scholarship steps are currently open, or will be opening soon, for your seniors:

Strengthen Your College List to help those students who haven't yet finalized their list of colleges.

Complete the FAFSA to motivate students to take this important step and not leave money for college on the table. (Please note that students who aren't eligible to complete the FAFSA may still earn an entry for this scholarship.) Tell your students to visit getfafsahelp.org to sign up early for Wyatt?, a free FAFSA assistance chatbot that answers their questions by text.

Apply to Colleges to encourage students to complete their college applications before February.

Whether you're conducting in-person, virtual, or hybrid learning this fall, your students can complete all actions for the College Board Opportunity Scholarships online at cb.org/opportunity. Use this program to support your college advising guidance and calendar. Don't forget to take the pledge today to receive a free digital toolkit and continue supporting your students on their path to college. Thank you for your commitment to your students.

Sincerely,

College Board
