Mindfulness/Stress Management Resources

We know this can be a stressful time for students and their families. Mindfulness is a practice that can provide you and your students stress management and calming strategies. When introducing this to your family, describe mindfulness and introduce mindfulness activity cards. These can be cut out and pulled out randomly when you need to do something to slow down or take a "mindful" break.

Common/simple definition of mindfulness: Mindfulness means paying full attention to something. It means slowing down to really notice what you're doing. Being mindful is the opposite of rushing or multitasking. When you're mindful, you're taking your time.

I wanted to make sure your graduating seniors didn’t miss out on the opportunity to apply for one of the four $1,000 scholarships that we will be awarding this spring.  It is not GPA based.  Rather, it is based on a video submission of the student addressing a particular set of questions surrounding the concept of bettering lives.  Following is an email from the person spear-heading our scholarship process this year.  Please feel free to reach out to Lindsay with any questions.  Hoping we’ll get some applications from Anderson County High School!

*****

Our scholarship application deadline is fast approaching and we want to hear from your graduating seniors!

Hello! My name is Lindsay Orange and along with being the Marketing Supervisor, I serve on the Scholarship Committee at Commonwealth Credit Union. Would your high school seniors be interested in $1,000 to help off-set the cost of post-secondary education? Commonwealth Credit Union can help. We are awarding $1,000 scholarships to four graduating high school seniors. The scholarship application is through a video submission so the students’ personalities can really shine! There are two deadlines:

  1. The student must be the primary account holder on a Commonwealth Credit Union membership on or before March 16, 2020.
  2. Video submissions must be uploaded by 5:00pm EDT, March 31, 2020.

Wouldn’t it be great if one of your seniors was a recipient? Just send them this link and they can apply:  https://ccuky.org/scholarshipinfo/scholarships.php?slider

Please let me know if you have any questions. If your students have any questions, they can contact us through [email protected] to reach one of the Scholarship Committee members.

Our local clothes closet for DCBS is in DIRE need of new pajamas for children who are taken into protective custody. They need sizes newborn to adult medium. Freshman Summer Program (FSP)

June 14 - July 17, 2020Freshman Summer Program

Program Description

The University of Kentucky (UK) Freshman Summer Program (FSP) is a five-week residential academic enrichment program designed to assist students with transitioning from high school to college and prepare them for the academic rigor of UK.  The program is targeted to underrepresented minority student groups including, but not limited to African American, Hispanic/Latinx, American Indian, Multi-racial, Hawaiian Pacific Islander, first generation and low-income students admitted to UK for the 2020 Fall Semester.

The program goal is to facilitate building a solid foundation that leads to increased retention and ultimately graduation. FSP participants will enroll in college level courses, engage in activities that allow them to have an understandable introduction to academic expectations through classroom experiences with faculty, learn about and connect to campus resources, i.e. services, programs and people, and begin to develop a sense of belonging and community.  Students will be better prepared to navigate the University.

How do I apply to the program?

Complete your online application and upload your senior year class schedule, teacher or counselor recommendation letter and a one-page self description on or before March 16, 2020.

Blue Paw Bullet Point

Have not yet achieved the required minimum College Readiness Indicator sub-scores as defined by the Council on Postsecondary Education in English (18), Math (19) and/or Reading (20).  For more detailed information click here http://www.uky.edu/app/placement-testing.

Blue Paw Bullet Point

Have a High School Readiness Index (HSRI) score less than 46

  • HSRI score = ACT Composite / 2 + Cumulative GPA (unweighted) x 10
  • Example:
    ACT of 22/2 = 11 + GPA of 3.0 x 10 = 30
    11 + 30 = HSRI score of 41

ACADEMIC COMPONENTS

Writing, Rhetoric, and Digital Studies (WRD 110)

This class focuses on critical inquiry and research. Students will engage in reflective thinking and analysis. WRD 110 asks students to write and speak effectively about local issues. This course places special emphasis on the skills of conducting primary and secondary research, as well as how to use visuals and online resources to enhance writing and oral presentations. Students will develop an understanding of the characteristics of good writing and the methods for becoming a confident writer in this new environment.

*Students who have earned previous credit in WRD 110 will enroll in STA 210 during the summer.

Academic Preparation and Placement (APP) Math (UK 100: APP Student Success)

APP Student Success is a section of UK 100 designed to help students through engagement with building academic success, fostering growth mindsets, and building fundamental concepts of mathematics. Students are given the opportunity to demonstrate mathematics college readiness by taking the ALEKS placement test at course completion. The ALEKS approach allows students to work at an individualized pace in a supportive classroom environment. Students are assisted by their instructor and peer instructor for one on one and small group instruction. This course replaces UK 095, UK 096, & UK 101: APP Student Success.

ALEKS Learning Lab

This lab is designed to help students focus on their individualized math content need within ALEKS PPL modules (e.g., college algebra, pre-calculus, calculus). Students work to meet their math goals through ALEKS learning objectives, engaging in a math growth mindset, creating an ALEKS math notebook, and setting topic goals. Students are assisted by their lab instructor and peer instructors for one on one and small group instruction. The lab will work to prepare students for individual student success on the ALEKS placement test and focus on mathematics growth mindset.

STATS 210

The goal of this course is to help students develop or refine their statistical literacy skills. Both the informal activity of human inference arising from statistical constructs, as well as the moral formal perspectives on statistical inference found in confidence intervals and hypothesis tests are studied. Throughout, the emphasis is on understanding what distinguishes good and bad inferential reasoning in the practical world around us.  (This class is open only for those students who have received credit for ENG 101/102 or WRD 110).

UK 101

This course is designed to assist undergraduates in adjusting to the academic life of the University. Through lectures, discussions, exercises, and out-of-class assignments, UK 101 helps first-year students: articulate the purpose and nature of a college education at a research university; articulate UK's expectations of its students; gain an appreciation of the University’s mission, history, and traditions; develop skills for achieving academic success such as study strategies and library research skills; increase awareness and use of campus resources; reflect on personal and social issues that first-year students often face in a college environment; become involved in the total life of the University; and form beneficial relationships with students, faculty, and staff.

Interest Groups
The focus of the Interest Groups is to build a peer community of students with similar interests, needs, or from similar backgrounds. Programming will be designed to help students address concerns, learn more about their interest or just establish meaningful networks that allow them to develop a sense of their personal identity. Group topics may be educational, intellectual, related to personal development, cultural or social.   Students who participate in the Interest Groups will build strong networks and develop a feeling of camaraderie.

NON-ACADEMIC COMPONENTS

A full program of activities is planned to enrich participants’ summer experience, including educational tours, recreational outings and social events.

Anyone interested in E-Sports???

My name is Alyssa Tinker and I am the esports coach at Midway University.  We are in the process of building our esports program and will be competing in the Fall 2020 season.  I was reaching out to see if you knew of any students that would be interested in playing esports at the collegiate level.  Students would have the opportunity for a lot of playing time and will be an important part of our program.  The games that we are competing in are League of Legends, Overwatch and Rocket League.  Midway offer academic and athletic scholarship to esports players.  Let me know if there are students interested in learning more about Midway and our exciting new program.

Thanks,

Alyssa Tinker

Five $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to individuals (graduating seniors and older) who are currently attending or will be attending a technical center, trade school, or enrolling in an apprenticeship program, each of which should be centered around the construction industry and should not be free programs. In addition to the five trade scholarships, two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded in 2020 to graduating high school seniors, GED recipients, or students who are currently enrolled in college or tech schools that live in modular, manufactured, or mobile homes. These awards are available for university, college, technical, or vocational programs.

Teachers, school counselors, and administrators are encouraged to offer the enclosed application to deserving students who will be attending one of the aforementioned schools/apprenticeship programs or currently reside in a modular, manufactured, or mobile home.  One application has been included; however, if you need more applications you can make a copy of the application or contact Logan Hanes at KMHI by phone at 502-223-0490 in Frankfort or by email at [email protected].  Completed applications must be post-marked no later than April 6, 2020.

This is being sent to Athletic Directors, Principals, Superintendents, and all Guidance Counselors on record at KHSAA member schools as a benefit to membership. This additional reminder is an attempt to ensure all member schools have the opportunity for students to apply.

Shortly after his death, former Commissioner Louis Stout's widow Anna help guide the creation of the Louis Stout Memorial Fund for Students. She felt this was a chance for the KHSAA to honor student-athletes who excel in athletics, academics, school service, and community service. The award process for 2019-2020 is now underway, as was noted in the KHSAA blog post on 11/22/19. Full details are on the KHSAA website at https://khsaa.org/11-22-19-applications-being-accepted-for-louis-stout-memorial-scholarships-for-19-20/.

The award winners will be announced in conjunction with the boys' state basketball tournament in March. Two grants, each in the amount of a one-time scholarship of $2,000 payable to an institution of higher learning, will be awarded. The scholarship is not renewable and is not endowed for expansion. Minimum criteria is a 3.5 (converted to 4.0 scale) grade point average, involvement in varsity sports or sport-activities, involvement in other school activities, a record of community service/involvement, and a member of the 2019-2020 senior class.

The application for the scholarships is located at http://khsaa.org/ge65-application-for-louis-stout-memorial-scholarship/ on the KHSAA web site. The deadline for the information to be received by the KHSAA is Feb. 28. There is no limit to the number of applicants from a school.

Stout was named the fifth Commissioner of the KHSAA on July 1, 1994, after serving as Executive Assistant Commissioner for two years and Assistant Commissioner for 21 years. Stout was the first African-American in the nation to head a state high school athletic association and was the fifth individual to serve as Commissioner of the Association. As Assistant and Executive Assistant Commissioner, Stout handled day-to-day management of the sports of baseball, cross country, soccer, wrestling, and softball. He also conducted rules clinics, recruited workers and officials, and managed State Tournament competition in those sports. He served on numerous national committees for the National Federation of High School Association (NFHS), from rules to governance.

Your students should be receiving their first semester report cards soon. This is a fantastic time to re-engage students or introduce them to RaiseMe, as they’ll have a lot of accomplishments under their belt and will be able to immediately see how much they’ve earned towards our partner colleges. Students can earn up to $1500 for every A they’ve earned in a course, up to $1000 for every B they’ve earned in a course, and up to $3000 for any AP/IB/dual-enrollment classes they’ve taken.

Good morning,

As was mentioned in the December Monthly Memo, we are excited to announce another free service to help youth quit vaping. This is Quitting is a text-based service for Kentuckians ages 13 to 24. Young people who want to enroll in This is Quitting should text KENTUCKY to 88709.

The Cabinet for Health &  Family Services’ press release about this service (below) went out this morning, so you may begin to see media inquiries about it over the next few days.

It is important to emphasize that This is Quitting does not replace either of our existing free services for quitting tobacco. We still encourage people of all ages to useQuit Now Kentucky and people under 18 to use My Life, My Quit. This is Quitting is just a third option to help us ensure that everyone can find a service that meets their needs. This document explains the differences between Quit Now Kentucky, My Life, My Quit, and This is Quitting.

Feel free to share the press release below, our Quitting Tobacco webpage, or the post(s) on our Facebook page.

If you have any questions about This is Quitting or Kentucky’s other free quitlines, please contact Cessation Administrator Heather Shaw.

FREE TEXT SERVICE TO HELP YOUNG KENTUCKIANS QUIT VAPING
Service Touted as New Federal Law Impacting Tobacco Sales Takes Effect

FRANKFORT, Ky. (1/9/20) — The Kentucky Department for Public Health, within the Cabinet for Health and Family Services, encourages teens and young adults who want to quit vaping to get free help from This Is Quitting, a nationwide texting service. CHFS and DPH officials say cessation services such as This Is Quitting are critical for young people and emphasized that many will be impacted by the recent federal law increasing the legal age to purchase tobacco and vaping products to 21.

This is Quitting was developed by Truth Initiative and is being promoted directly to Kentuckians through a collaboration with DPH. The service is intended for young people ages 13 to 24, and is tailored by age group to give appropriate recommendations about quitting vaping. It was developed with input from young people who have already attempted to or succeeded in quitting e-cigarettes. Participants should text KENTUCKY to 88709 to enroll in the program, which provides up to nine weeks of coaching.

CHFS Acting Secretary Eric Friedlander said quitting tobacco, nicotine, or vaping products will improve your health at any age, and with the resources offered through DPH and other providers, it takes just a few steps to be on the path toward quitting.

“In light of a recent federal law increasing the age of legal tobacco sales to 21, we know many young people will need support giving up tobacco and e-cigarette products,” he said. “This Is Quitting is a great resource specifically created to help young people quit using e-cigarettes and we are very happy to partner with the Truth Initiative to help more young Kentuckians lead healthier lives.

“Many young people who started vaping now want to quit, but they don’t know how,” said Dr. Amanda Graham, Chief of Innovations at Truth Initiative. “The fact that young people are setting a quit date the day they enroll shows that they are eager to break free from vaping. Our program allows them to get support discreetly and anonymously without having to disclose to an adult that they are vaping.”

Young people who enroll in This is Quitting will receive one support text per day leading up to the day they quit vaping, and for at least 60 days after their ‘quit date.’ For those not ready to commit to quitting but who are still interested in learning more, This is Quitting will send at least four weeks of messages focused on building skills and confidence to prepare for quitting. In addition to their scheduled messages, participants can also receive on-demand support for cravings, stress, and set-backs in their quitting journey.

According to the 2019 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, more than 53 percent of Kentucky’s high schoolers have ever used an e-cigarette. More than half of those students are current users. By comparison, around 30 percent of Kentucky high schoolers have ever smoked a traditional cigarette, and approximately 9 percent are current smokers.

“E-cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco product among Kentucky youth,” said DPH Health Promotion Section Supervisor Elizabeth Anderson-Hoagland. “While we absolutely do not want any teen to start vaping, we also want to make sure we’re providing resources to help them quit.”

Quitting vaping can be challenging because almost all e-cigarettes contain nicotine, the same addictive chemical found in cigarettes and other tobacco products. One JUUL pod contains as much nicotine as an entire pack of cigarettes. A 2018 Truth Initiative study found that 63 percent of youth and young adult JUUL-users did not know that the product always contains nicotine.

This is Quitting and DPH’s other free tobacco-cessation resources like My Life, My Quit and Quit Now Kentucky are especially important for teens and young adults, for whom nicotine is particularly detrimental. The U.S. Surgeon General has reported that nicotine exposure is particularly dangerous in adolescents because it can “prime the brain for addiction to other drugs such as cocaine.”

This is Quitting also comes alongside DPH and the CDC’s investigation into the nationwide outbreak of e-cigarette or vaping product use associated lung injury (EVALI). More than 2,400 people across the country have been hospitalized with serious respiratory issues as a result of using e-cigarettes, though the exact cause of their injuries remains unknown. More than 50 patients have died as a result of this outbreak. Many of those affected are young people, probably because they are more likely to vape than other age groups.

DPH provides updated EVALI information at https://chfs.ky.gov/agencies/dph/dmch/hpb/Pages/pdinfo.aspx.

Truth Initiative launched This is Quitting nationwide in January 2019 and has since enrolled over 70,000 teens and young adults. Peer-reviewed research on the program has revealed that more than 60 percent of participants reported they had reduced or completely stopped using e-cigarettes after just two weeks. CHFS will be promoting This is Quitting on college campuses and through its social media accounts.

Truth Initiative is a nonprofit tobacco control organization that focuses on helping youth and young adults in America stop using tobacco products. “Quitting e-cigarettes can be isolating for young people,” added Graham. “Text messaging is a proven, powerful strategy to deliver interventions that drive behavior change. We’ve taken input directly from young people and positioned This is Quitting as a supportive, non-judgmental friend, with text messages written in the first person or as quotes from other users.”

Flyers and palm cards with the text code and number will be distributed to schools and other community partners across Kentucky who engage with youth and young adults. For more information about the program or to request materials contact DPH Tobacco Cessation Administrator Heather Shaw at [email protected] or (502) 564-9358 ext. 4017.

Dear Cynthia,

At the Bill of Rights Institute, we love to ask challenging questions. We also love to reward students who rise to the challenge by tackling some of the most compelling questions of our time. For this year's We the Students Essay Contest, we are challenging students to tell us what civil discourse means to them. The students who provide the most thoughtful, meaningful responses to this question will receive scholarship awards of up to $7,500. A total of fourteen students will receive scholarship prizes totaling $20,000.

For this essay, we are asking students to not only share their comprehension of what civil discourse is meant to be but to also relate what it looks like when it works – and when it doesn’t – and why. Perhaps they will choose to include mention of a time when they, themselves, were part of an exchange intended to understand something – how did they go about it? We encourage them to bring emotion, creativity, specific examples (including current events), and well-researched facts into what they write.

We the Students isn't your students' only opportunity to win scholarships and prizes by taking on the important issues of the day. Every two weeks on our Think the Vote debate platform, we ask students to share their opinion on a current events-related question. The students who make the strongest case for their position on both sides of the question win a gift card, swag, and a chance at a $1000 scholarship at the end of the school year. The latest question: Can the federal government find a balance between religious liberty and LGBTQ protections?

My name is Jerrad Ohr I'm writing to you to announce a scholarship that my law firm is sponsoring for students in 2020. The scholarship is to help any student who has been impacted by being seriously injured (or by a family member being seriously injured).

To apply, students must write a 750-1,000 word essay in response to the following prompt:

"Write an essay explaining in detail how a serious accident involving you, a family member, or a close friend has impacted your life. This could have been a car crash, a slip-and-fall accident, a work-related injury, or any other serious accident. How has this injury impacted your college plans?"

The deadline to apply for this scholarship is July 20, 2020. Submissions will open on Jan 1, 2020. The winner of the scholarship will be awarded $1,000 to help pay for college-related expenses.

If you could possibly share this scholarship with your students, I'd appreciate it. We are trying to get some more applicants this year.

You can see the scholarship information here: www.rosenohrlaw.com/scholarship

Hope your week is going great so far.

Thank you!

Updates from the web

The U.S. Department of Education recently released updates to the College Scorecard, which is designed to help students as they are weighing education options after high school.

For the first time, students can find important information on potential debt and what they can expect to earn one year after completing their education based on what they choose to study – including for two-year programs, four-year degrees, certificate programs and some graduate programs.

Students also can use College Scorecard’s comparison tool to compare up to 10 school options to see how they stack up.

This video provides an introduction to the updated features of the new College Scorecard:

This is Erin Field following up one last time on the project I sent you last week. It is a project I created to help high school seniors and college students become more aware of the risks of alcohol abuse.

I see many people whose lives have been ruined alcohol abuse in my practice, and my goal with this project is to try to help students avoid abusing alcohol in the first place.

The project explains the signs and symptoms of alcohol abuse, how to get help for yourself or a friend, the places on college campuses where alcohol abuse is most likely to occur, the risks of alcohol abuse, and more.

You can take a look at the project here: www.ctdefenselawyer.com/college-substances

If you would consider sharing this with your students, I'd appreciate it. I'm trying to get this out to people who will be helped by it.

Hope your week is going well so far!
Erin Field
