Good evening!

I hope you have had a great weekend! I wanted to share some brief notes with you in regards to scholarships and other exciting events quickly approaching. Before I tell you about everything, please take a moment to watch our new video and learn why your students NEED to be at Morehead State University next fall by clicking here!

FREE ONLINE APPLICATION WEEK!

During the week of November 21st, Morehead State will be having a free online application week! If students apply online that week at www.moreheadstate.edu/apply, they can use a special promo code to get their application fee waived. The promo code for the week is:

THANKS17

Please encourage any student who has not applied to MSU to take advantage of this opportunity! Our application fee is otherwise $30, so this is a great way for students to save some money and get their application processed!

SCHOLARSHIPS

As a reminder, the Honors Program scholarship deadline is December 1st. The application is available at www.moreheadstate.edu/honors. Students will need to print the application and mail it in, and it must be postmarked by December 1st. Last year, the average ACT score for recipients was 28+, but please do not let that deter excellent students from applying.

Also, I am excited to announce that the 2017-2018 online scholarship application for MSU Foundation Scholarships is now available! Attached you will find instructions on how students can apply for these additional awards which can be “stacked” with our automatic Institutional Scholarships.

The majority of the Foundation Scholarships use the “General Scholarship Application” but there are some which have their own application. Those requiring a specific application will be updated throughout the next few months. Please note - most of the Foundation Scholarships have deadlines in March and/or June, and recipients will not be awarded until the deadline has passed.

I will be relaying this information to your students, but please reinforce this by encouraging them to apply for as many of these scholarships as possible! Also, keep in mind, for our automatic Institutional awards (Commonwealth Scholarship, Kentucky Scholars Award, Dean’s Scholar Award, etc.), students must be admitted by March 15th.

UPCOMING EVENTS

We are introducing academic showcase dates this fall! If you have students who are interested in the following areas, I encourage them to visit campus for these specifically tailored events. Spots are filling up quickly, so please have them register ASAP at www.moreheadstate.edu/visit (at the bottom of the webpage).

Thursday, December 1st – Nursing

During these events, students can apply free of charge, tour the academic department classrooms and labs, and will have an opportunity to win a $500 MSU Bookstore voucher!

As always, please let me know if you or your students have any questions. I look forward to seeing you soon and I hope you have a wonderful week!

Thanks again, and GO EAGLES!

Sincerely,

David Ray Gillum

The SOS YC (Saving Our Students) Youth Coalition is sponsoring an Art Contest for Teens that is 2 fold: 1) to educate teens for prevention of drug use, and 2) to showcase artistic talents of teens in the community. The contest is part of the Youth Coalition's year long anti-drug project entitled "101 Things to Do Besides Drugs" that is currently ongoing.

The contest period will be from December 1, 2016, until January 6, 2017. All high school students in Anderson County are encouraged & welcome to participate in the contest.

Please see attached informational page, which provides details about contest, entries & winning prizes. 3-4 winning entries will become part of the Youth Coalition's brochure that's being created & will be distributed community wide next spring.

We are hoping that ACHS & CAL will encourage their students to participate in this contest activity.

Art contest entry forms & an informational sheet about the contest are attached for your use. If you have questions or need additional information regarding this matter, please contact me at 502-517-1938 or at [email protected].

On behalf of the SOS YC students, who care so much about their peers & work hard to prevent drug use, thank you very much.

Respectfully,
Donna Crain Drury, Advisor

Cynthia,

Greetings from the University of Louisville!
With the UofL scholarship application now available, we are actively working with high school counselors to gather the names of academically talented Black/African American and Hispanic/Latino seniors who qualify for specific scholarships within our office. We ask that you please review the following UofL diversity scholarship descriptions and criteria, and follow the links to nominate your students as soon as possible. The scholarship application deadline is December 15, 2016.
Please note: If you nominate a student for the Woodford R. Porter Scholarship and that student also qualifies for the Martin Luther King Scholars Program, there is no need to complete the MLK Scholars Program nomination. The student will be automatically considered for both scholarships.
Woodford R. Porter Scholarship
Black/African American Students with 3.0 GPA and 20 ACT*
The Woodford R. Porter Scholarship was named after the former trustee, Woodford R. Porter Sr., known for his dedication to strong advocacy for education in Louisville, KY. His famous saying was "education is the great equalizer," as he believed it to be the ultimate path towards self and collective improvement. This scholarship annually provides over 200 Black/African American students with a variety of awards ranging from $2,000 to full in-state tuition, plus a stipend to cover room, food and book expenses
_
Martin Luther King Scholars Program
Black/African American or Hispanic/Latino Students with 3.5 GPA and 26 ACT or 1240 SAT**
The Martin Luther King Scholars participate in an engaging leadership development program while enrolled at the University of Louisville. In this mentored scholar program, students have the opportunity to explore issues surrounding peace and social justice through course work, service learning, and a unique immersion trip. In addition to a specialized academic track and other unique opportunities, the program provides full in-state tuition plus an $8,000 stipend to cover other university expenses.
