Feedback From the First Student Fair
More than 18,000 students and families participated in the Sept. 13 NACAC Virtual College Fair. The response was so great that the virtualcollegefairs.orgsite was temporarily swamped with people trying to attend. We're working hard to make sure the next virtual fairs run flawlessly from the start.
We've enjoyed the comments from students who participated. In fact, 76 percent of participants rated the fair as Excellent or Good."This was fun!"

How-to Video and Guide
Share this short video and this quick start guide with students. Each provides an overview of how students can make the most of their fair experience. (P.S.: A newer version of the video will be uploaded on Monday.)
Students are encouraged to sign up at virtualcollegefairs.org and look around several days before each fair date. They can click the "Remind Me" button when they see a Zoom session that will be offered by a college that interests them. The reminder will get added to their "My Schedule" tab and they'll receive a text when the session is about to start.

To find out which colleges will be at each fair, students can use the search and filter features on the virtualcollegefairs.org site or they can download these lists: Oct. 12, Oct. 18, and Nov. 8.

Additional Learning Opportunities

A Note For Counselors: Because of disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, colleges and universities are not able to easily reach high school juniors and seniors with information about their programs, financial aid, and scholarship opportunities in the way they have in the past.
NACAC, for the first time, is helping to bridge this gap and facilitate connections between students and higher education institutions by offering student registration lists to eligible US colleges and universities for a nominal fee. Students participating in the fall season of NACAC Virtual College Fairs are asked to opt-in during the registration process.

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Elks National Foundation (ENF) has kicked off the 2021 scholarship year. Here are the details! Most Valuable Student (MVS) Contest: The 2021 MVS application is now open. Applications can be found online at enf.elks.org/MVS. The application deadline is November 15th. The Elks National Foundation (ENF) awards 500 four-year scholarships based on academics, leadership, and financial need. National awards range from $1,000 per year to $12,500 per year. The national awards will be announced in April 2021.
In addition to the national awards, entry into the MVS contest makes students eligible for additional scholarship opportunities on the state and local level:
- The Kentucky Elks Association will be presenting an additional $20,0000 in scholarships to 16 students staewide who enter the contest and are not selected as national finalists.
- The Frankfort Elks Lodge will be presenting four $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors from Frankfort and Franklin County high schools. We will also be presenting the second annual Ronald Boyd Whitaker Memorial Scholarship (also worth $1,000) to a graduating senior from Anderson County High School.
MVS scholarships are for students pursuing a four-year degree on a full-time basis (minimum of 12 semester hours), at a U.S. college or university next school year. Some important applicant details include: « Current high school seniors (or equivalent) who are citizens of the United States are eligible to apply. « Applicants do not have to be related to a member of the Elks. « Male and female students compete separately. Applicants select from a list of the Lodges closest to their home address zip code. Please have your students choose Frankfort Lodge #530 as their sponsoring Lodge. Complete details can be found at enf.elks.org/MVS. Legacy Awards – The Legacy Awards program begins on September 1st. Legacy Awards provide $4,000 scholarships for children and grandchildren of dues-paying Elk members. The ENF offers a total of 350 national awards. Hagan scholarship You are receiving this letter because you may have one or more students who meet the eligibility criteria for a Hagan Scholarship. The Hagan Scholarship is a nationwide need-based merit scholarship, designed to provide each recipient with the opportunity to Graduate College Debt-Free. Recipients of a Hagan Scholarship will graduate from an Eligible Public High School located in a county having fewer than 50,000 residentsor from a remote rural public high school located in a larger county. There is NO Application Fee. To inform your students about the Hagan Scholarship please provide a link from your school’s website toHaganscholarships.org. Hagan Scholarship recipients are high achieving, self-motivated students who will require substantial financial assistance to attend college. The Hagan Scholarship provides up to $48,000 over four years; nine hundred twenty-seven Hagan Scholars from 43 states are currently enrolled at 358 colleges and universities. Over 2,000 Hagan Scholarships have been awarded to date, 500 more scholarships will be awarded in April 2021. The award of a Hagan Scholarship can be life changing for many recipients. We know this back-to-school season is anything but typical. On top of navigating changes brought on by covid-19, you're also working with your students to finalize their college lists, complete the FAFSA®, and submit college applications.
The good news is that the College Board Opportunity Scholarships program was created to help your students with these steps while earning the chance at a scholarship for completing each action. The program is currently open to class of 2021 students in the United States, Puerto Rico, and U.S. territories, regardless of citizenship status. U.S. citizens and residents attending Department of Defense Education Activity schools abroad may also participate. At least half of all scholarships are designated for students whose families earn less than $60,000 per year.
The first step in helping your students earn scholarships is to take the College Board Opportunity Scholarships pledge. When you sign up for the pledge, you'll receive a free digital toolkit as well as monthly reminders and resources. | |
